Bar measures explained

Jigger
The double-ended measuring cup behind most bars. The standard US jigger measures 1.5 oz (44 ml) on the large side and 0.75 or 1 oz on the small side.
Pony
A 1 oz (30 ml) measure, usually the small side of a jigger.
Shot
No single legal size. In the US a shot is usually 1.5 oz (44 ml), in the UK 25 or 35 ml, and in much of Europe 40 ml.
Dash
A quick shake from a bitters bottle, about 1/32 oz or just under 1 ml. Dashes vary with the bottle's dasher top, so treat them as a rough measure.
Barspoon
The long twisted spoon used for stirring. One barspoon holds about 5 ml, close to a teaspoon.
Splash
An unmeasured pour, usually 1/4 to 1/2 oz (7 to 15 ml) of juice or soda.
Top / top up
Fill the glass the rest of the way, normally with soda, tonic or sparkling wine. In a highball glass that is 3 to 4 oz (90 to 120 ml).
Part
A ratio, not a volume. "2 parts gin, 1 part vermouth" works with any measure as long as you use the same one for both.

Frequently asked questions

How many ml in a shot?

In the US a standard shot is 1.5 oz, or 44 ml. In the UK it is 25 ml (some bars pour 35 ml), and in Germany and much of Europe 20 or 40 ml.

A standard US jigger holds 1.5 oz (44 ml) on its large cup. The smaller cup is usually 0.75 oz or 1 oz. Japanese-style jiggers often measure 30 ml and 45 ml or 30 ml and 60 ml.

How many shots are in a 750 ml bottle?
